This ancient native Hawaiian plant is indigenous to Hawaii and can't be found anywhere else in the world. It is a part of the nettle family and grows into a shrub or tree with heart shaped leaves that have prominent red viens that produce edible white berries that grow along the branches. It is an important native food source for only two native butterflies Pulelehua Kamehameha or Kamehameha butterfly (Vanessa tameamea) and Koa or Blackburn butterfly (Udara blackburni) and has long been used as a medicinal herb for a variety of general debilities.
Traditionally it was used by Hawaiians to relax tense muscles prior to child birth, but Mamaki has also been used for other remedies. Mamaki leaves have been used to cleanse the blood and release toxins from the body. It is a digestive and heart tonic and a mild nervine that calms stress and reduces fatigue helping the body to relax.
