Guava is a beautiful tree that produces delicious tropical fruits with oval shaped leaves that have veins that go from the base of the leaf all the way to the tip. Part of the Eucalyptus family, this American native species grows abundant in Hawaii. It is a relative to the strawberry guava that has become an invasive plant to Hawaii, but both have similar medicinal properties. This herb has long been used as an excellent digestive and reproductive tonic. Its tranquilizing effect on intestinal smooth muscle along with its antispasmodic, antifungal, and antibacterial properties make it great for use against intestinal infections that cause diarrhea and dysentery. A helpful antacid for heartburn and ulcers makes it an all-around go to for digestive support. It is also calming to the nervous system as a mild sedative and nerve relaxant for reproductive cramps and nerve pain. Helpful in regulating menstruation and hormones as well.
